Dandridge is the second oldest city in Tennessee. The first Euro-American settlers arrived in Dandridge in 1783, and the town was officially incorporated in 1793 as the county seat of Jefferson County, which had been created the previous year. The town was named for Martha Dandridge Washington the wife of the first president of the United States. Population growth for Dandridge through the 1990’s was approximately 35%. It is estimated that in the first 5 years of this decade the population has grown by about 13%. Dandridge is situated along the northern bank of Douglas Lake, and Douglas Lake sits at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Douglas Lake’s 30,400 acres of water surface, and 555 miles of shoreline attract more than 1.7 million recreation visits per year. There are three public golf courses within a twenty mile radius of Dandridge’s corporate limits. Each one has Bermuda fairways and bent grass greens. Patriot Hills has a 3.5 star rating by Golf Digest and is regularly voted as having the best greens in East Tennessee.
